Spirited Conversation

Nathan Wooden knows his Martinis. Nathan knows a lot about spirits in general having been a Beverage Director and Sommelier at some of New York’s finest restaurants and watering holes. In this issue of SARTO, he reveals that the quintessential New York version of the martini, the “Old King Cole” can be found not surprisingly at the Old King Cole bar in the St. Regis Hotel (although that is still good one) but rather in a very unexpected place.

Download SARTO in our newsstand to find out where to locate the most elevated version of this classic cocktail and in the meantime, here’s Nathan’s recipe for a similar version you can try at home.

The Old King Cole:

3 ounces of Old Raj Gin
1/4 ounce of Dry Vermouth
2-3 dashes of orange bitters

Add all ingredients into a mixing glass filled with ice. Stir ingredients and strain into a chilled coupe.
Garnish with lemon twist or olives.

Enjoy.
